His current exhibition space, Saladino Gallery, is located in the heart of historic downtown Covington. <image:title>Jim Graham - Jim Graham</image:title>
<image:caption>Jim Graham’s paintings are most often recognized for their thin layering of imagery and intense chromatic surfaces. Grahams work relates to a group of contemporary painters opting for a more varied image making process that devalues the importance of a singular object and focuses on creating new combinations within a rich visual society. As a result, the images fluctuate nimbly between historical norms of representation and abstraction allowing for a more immediate response to a fresh and active present. Graham received his MFA from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign and a BFA from Florida State University. His paintings have been exhibited in both independent art galleries and academic institutions throughout the country including recent shows at the Cole Pratt Gallery in New Orleans and the Sella-Granata Gallery at the University of Alabama. He has also been a visiting artist and lecturer at the University of Utah in Salt Lake City and at Tennessee Technological University in Cookeville. He was a 2015 Joan Mitchell Foundation Emerging Artist Grant nominee and a 2017 State of Louisiana Research Grant recipient. Graham currently lives in Covington, LA where he is an instructor of painting and drawing at Southeastern Louisiana University.</image:caption>

<image:title>Blake O'Brien - Blake O'Brien</image:title>
<image:caption>To have a definitive concept before beginning a work is to finish what has not even had the chance to begin. The delineation of thought and application of charcoal on paper must be done simultaneously in order to find an honest and whole image. As I wrestle with a drawing I may change a shape's nature from geometric to organic, or move an edge to be in syntax with the format. Those same decisions concurrently change a king into a wizard or a shoulder into a chair. The visceral process of searching for visual and associative harmony is a self-sustaining and self-transforming one which is begun by the artist and which should end somewhere in the unknown. The process gives the individual the opportunity to discover within and without himself. An interesting thing to me is that when discussing this process (when applied to any situation), we realize that humans have the ability to actually teach themselves. Whether it be through trial and error or the sequential steps in the mind when solving a problem, the fact is clear that we get ideas; ideas that were not put into our minds from the outside world. Where do these thoughts come from if not from outside of ourselves? Did we know these things all along? I use the two-dimensional plane as a tool to explore my own psyche. The metaphysical elements of life are what I find beautiful- being, time, knowledge - and it is these which I attempt to make physical.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Within our complex, sometimes chaotic human experience, there also exists interconnectedness, balance and beauty if we choose to pay attention to it. My work is about the ever winding path between. The most authentic framework for my work comes in the form of a non-linear abstract story. It is constructed with the tools of balance and trust. My visual language relies heavily on duality, metaphor, repetition, nostalgia, history, symbolism, movement and geometry. Photography holds a dominant place in my work. I value its ability to capture a direct experience. Most curious for me is how to create photographs that are “unbound” from the confines of a viewfinder in order to merge and integrate with new environments.</image:caption>

It is a love/hate relationship, a defiant, delicate material to work and demands caution of the invisible heat that breathes life into the piece. You can hammer, grind, blast, fold, anodize, directy powder paint, and polish to a beautiful mirror finish. When experimenting with gouging and texture, it can be disastrous and painful, but most fulfilling. Simply amazing to work with, I always respect the feel for the endless flexibility of clay and patient demands of working with stone. I hope my efforts are as pleasing to the viewer as the enjoyment of the creative process is to me.</image:caption>

<image:title>Alexei Kazantsev - Alexei Kazantsev</image:title>
<image:caption>Alexei Kazantsev was born in Alexandrov, Russia, in 1966. At the age of fourteen, he was apprenticed to his uncle, Sergei Kazantsev, an acclaimed sculptor, and over the next twelve years completed a Bachelor and a Master of Fine Arts with high honors at Moscow State Art Institute (Surikov). Traveling to the United States, he established himself as a sculptor, and over the next twenty-nine years completed numerous works for private collectors, sculpture gardens, and public commissions, many of them throughout Louisiana. Kazantsev’s interest in photography began in 2007. At that time, he discovered its potential for artistic expression, photographing landscapes and vineyards all along the West Coast. Finally moving to New Orleans permanently, he became a photographer for Jazz Ru, a Russian jazz magazine. As a result of shooting events at New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival, Voodoo Fest, Preservation Hall and other music venues, his passion for photography grew. Kazantsev considers himself to be an “anti-glam” photographer. He prefers to take pictures of subjects that are moving through real life – real feelings, real bodies, and real situations. If he works with models in the studio, he establishes close emotional contact to ensure natural responses, and whenever possible he uses natural light rather than studio lights and flash. Of course, New Orleans traditional outdoor celebrations give him his favorite subjects. Photography eventually became his preferred mode of expression because it puts him in touch with the different New Orleans “street” subcultures – especially Mardi Gras, Voodoo, and the Mardi Gras Indians. He loves the combination of beauty, art and tradition that they embody. His photographs of the Mardi Gras Indians, published in Jazz Ru and the Times Picayune, reflect his love and respect for the history, culture and spirit of New Orleans. His work has also been published in The New Orleans Advocate, Off Beat, Gambit, The Lens.com, NolaVie.Com, Examiner.com, and MyNewOrleans.com.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Interdisciplinary sculptor, Babette Beaullieu, forges sculpture, installation and performance into a vehicle in which she takes a critical look at memory, impermanence and balance. Her organic sculptures have a visceral quality that is minimalistic, influenced by Zen Philosophy. She has been commissioned to create sculpture for private collections throughout the U.S.; her performances entitled Memoirs of the Sistahood, has been performed in several major cities in the U.S. In this interdisciplinary work, she collaborates with her sister, Becky Beaullieu Valls, who is a dance choreographer from Houston, Texas. Layering of sensory memories is accomplished through on-stage art making, dance and film using both personal and universal themes. Her installations deal with cultural and personal objects, ritual and memory: collecting and shedding. A couple of such projects include: Memoirs of the Sistahood: Chapter Four Sacred Trails(2013): an installation that creates a path of white dresses. Growth (2008) was a site specific installation in an overgrown yard after Katrina where a path of red women dresses were placed. The Portage Bike Tour (2018) she created in New Orleans followed an ancient pathway through the city. Support for her work includes: National Performance Network Residency Grant, Diverse Works Artspace Residency in Houston, Brown Grant, Louisiana Division of the Arts, the private collection of Sam and Jaque Cannon, private collection of Carlos Sanchez and David Finley, private collect of Bruce and Lou Steward.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Always hoping to be somewhere, I create work that is rooted in landscape. The spaces I present are places where a lot of hoping occurs. In a landscape that forces one to feel simultaneously big and small, the participant owns nothing, takes nothing, keeps nothing. My landscapes are definitions of what it means to be human, without the keeping of material or superficial objects or considerations. I constantly question the notion of what is home. My images are always set in the present, and act as attempts to answer questions of fulfillment, contentedness, purpose. The idea of keeping and hoping are tangled, and so becomes the bedrock of the content of my work.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Always a mystery, wood allows us an insight to the magic of nature. Color, texture, grain and growth rings all add to the dynamics of this medium. Unlike additive mediums such as painting, drawing and sculpting, this work is a subtractive medium. Unable to see into the wood, it requires me to peel away layers to arrive at a final design element. It is the nexus of these elements that allows the viewer to move throughout the work to appreciate the total work. Using different type of woods and surface treatments allows the viewer to view the whole work and at the same time to be able to find interesting individual elements within the individual pieces. The micro view of the piece is to focus the viewers’ attention to the unique designs that naturally occur in nature. The macro view is hopefully the viewer will look for those unique designs that are all around us in our natural environment.</image:caption>

<image:caption>My goal is to create an atmosphere of curiosity and exploration with my sculptures. Industrial structures, furniture, architecture, tools, and other familiar objects populate my work. Combining life-size objects and miniature representations I create works that engage the viewer on a human scale as well as contain vast space within their boundaries. Intricate surfaces and interiors construct vignettes that viewers can project themselves inside, stimulating personal narratives and evoking private memories. The quasi-architectural/ mechanical appearance of my sculptures combine archaic construction methods with modern techniques and materials, in an effort to demonstrate my appreciation for the immediacy of antiquated technology, as I do my best to embrace the advancements of today. It is my hope for viewers, that the carefully considered construction and subtle imperfections of my sculptures will emphasize their difference from the machine-made objects that fill our lives. With the objects I create I impart to the viewer a setting for their imagination to expand upon, informed by their own experiences, and guided by curiosity.</image:caption>

<image:title>Juli Juneau - Juli Juneau</image:title>
<image:caption>Juli Juneau first made New Orleans her home in 1989. In 1995 she created Nomad Collection, which began as an import business featuring Balinese Sarongs, Tuareg jewelry sourced from her travels in Mali, and her own travel photography. She has traveled extensively throughout the world including a 21⁄2 year solo adventure from Dakar, Senegal to Cape Town, South Africa. This inspiring journey through 23 African countries by land (boat, barge, train, even donkey cart – any means possible!) made the African continent and her people, music, culture, wildlife, and geography especially dear to Juli’s heart. Her glass art has a luster reflecting her spirit of curiosity and compassion. “The organic creation of glass is part of its mystique and power: a lightning storm, a bolt ignites and a piece of glass appears -much like a genie rising from the desert sands of Africa. This magic is the lure and the passion of glass for me.” “Blown glass is extremely seductive and attracts the feminine side of us all, yet creating these lush and sensual forms is powerful and intense. When I handle a large mass of molten liquid-glass at the end of my 5-foot blowpipe and face the blasting heat of 2300 degree furnaces, I find it a macho, masculine, sometimes Herculean task requiring every drop of physical strength and stamina I can muster. Yet, at times, my touch must be as delicate as brushing a hair from my face.” In 2003, Juli spent 1 year volunteering with The International AIDS Trust in southern Africa. Once home, she was instrumental in “bringing a piece of Africa” to Louisiana, opening and operating the non-profit Juneau Safari Resort for disadvantaged children. There, Juli has bottle-raised and tamed baby zebra and many kangaroos surrounded by giraffe and camels and a variety of other “wild animals” she tamed. After years of admiring blown glass, Juli began to create her own glass art in 1999. Her work is displayed in a multitude of US and international collections including those of Sir Anthony Hopkins, Brad Pitt & Angelina Jolie, Oprah Winfrey Headquarters Permanent Collection, Lou Gossett, Hoda Kotb, Dave Chappelle, Russell Simmons, Dustin Hoffman, Cokie Roberts, LSU Football Coach Les & Cathy Miles, Tom Benson of the New Orleans Saints, Goldring family, Anheuser Busch Private Collection, and the Ritz-Carton New Orleans and Citizens Bank permanent collections. Juli has been commissioned by the Louisiana Endowment for the Humanities to design and create their annual “Bright Lights” awards since 2015. She has also been commissioned to create the national biannual “Heroes in Recovery” awards since 2013. She also creates the annual awards for the American Red Cross Power of Women and Eden House. Her permanent installations for Avanti Senior Living Communities may be currently seen at Towne Lake in Houston, TX, Vision Park in Shenandoah, TX, Flower Mound in Dallas, TX, Avanti at Covington, LA, and upcoming Augusta Pines, Houston, TX and Avanti at Lafayette, LA.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Growing up in the swamps and marshes of South Louisiana provided me a vast and unique world from which to draw, both personally and creatively. My late father, a professional trapper and outdoorsman, passed down his love and awe of the coastal environment , animals and birds to me. His mission was always to put back in as much as he took. And, in a sense, that is what I do with my art, visually take and creatively return. It is the love of nature and wildlife, mostly wading birds and waterfowl, which inspires all of my paintings. I must also add that I am 100% self taught. The Mississippi Gulf Coast has been my home for twenty years now, and my eyes can not take in all the rich abundance of flora & fauna! Everywhere I look, there is color and life! Compositions begin forming and I fight to place on canvas that which my eyes conceive. The world around me is constantly changing and inspiring my senses, and I respond with work that is continually growing and evolving. Over the years, my work has been featured in Beach Boulevard Magazine, WLOX news, and on display at the Pascagoula Audubon Center. I also enjoy painting mural and other designs, which can be seen at the House Of Blues in New Orleans, LA. and Orlando, FL. You can find my work in Mississippi Gulf Coast, Coastal Alabama, Sanibel Island, Florida, and South Louisiana galleries, as well.</image:caption>

<image:title>Adrian Deckbar - Adrian Deckbar</image:title>
<image:caption>Adrian Deckbar is a painter who uses photography as the basis for her work, which explores the boundaries of photorealism. Her transformation of photographic source material into acrylic and oil paintings take on a heightened sense of reality. The undulation of shapes, with light raking across the forms, pulsate with life. Vivid colors and jewel tones are contrasted with dark forms throughout the pieces, creating dynamic textures. The paintings become visually dramatic and mysterious. EARLY LIFE Learning to play the violin at an age 9, Deckbar became attuned to the nuance and delicacy of sounds. Performing the Bach Concerto for Two Violins at age 14, she was exhilarated by the sensitivity of the instrument. Around the same time, she began her lifelong interest in observational drawing, when she also discovered Michelangelo. The larger than life scale of his work, and its emotional content, impressed her. FIGURATIVE Just a few years later, when studying contemporary painting, Deckbar discovered that an art movement was born which pivoted in her direction. She had begun projecting images to create life sized figure paintings using her friends for models. Later that same year, Chuck Close, Robert Bechtel and other photorealists were featured in Artforum, and photorealism was declared an art movement. After earning her BA in Painting, Deckbar traveled West to learn this painting technique. Deckbar moved to San Francisco to study with Robert Bechtel, earning her MA in Painting. For her thesis, she produced a series of paintings titled ‘B Movie,’ which featured life size figures, painted in a super realist narrative, as film noir-like images. Here, she departed from the photorealists, concentrating on the drama in the scene staged for the final painting. For the next three decades, Deckbar continued to push the cinematic quality of her figurative work in this direction. LANDSCAPES After 30 years, Deckbar decided to leave the studio with her camera. She approached the primordial world, seeking drama created by the play of light on natural forms. She drew inspiration and images from the bayous and lakes around New Orleans, as well as the hills of the Ozarks, creating large bodies of work in this genre. She hunted for, rather than staged her images. The study of these forms affected her painting in its application, as direct paint rather than blended illusion was the influence of working from nature. Deckbar holds an MFA in Painting from Tulane University, an MA in Painting from San Francisco State University, and a BA in Painting from University of Louisiana at Lafayette. She has served on the faculty of Tulane University, The New Orleans Academy of Fine Arts, The Bascom Art Center, and Vermont College of Norwich University. She maintains studios in New Orleans and Leslie, AR. Her work is included in many public and private, and corporate collections in the US and abroad, including the New Orleans Museum of Art; the Ogden Museum of Southern Art; the Alexandria Museum of Art; the Louisiana Arts and Sciences Museum; the Hilliard Art Museum; Brenau University; Ochsner Foundation Hospital; Loyola University School of Dentistry; Tulane Medical School; The Eliza Jane Hotel; New Orleans, One River Place, New Orleans; Radisson Suite Hotel; Lykes Steamship Co.; and Chevron Corporation. Adrian Deckbar has received grants from the Louisiana Division of the Arts, The Adolph Gottlieb Foundation, The Pollack-Krasner Foundation, and the Joan Mitchell Foundation. Deckbar has had numerous reviews and publications of her work, including “Art in the American South: Works from the Ogden Collection” by Randolph Delehanty.</image:caption>

<image:title>Steve Martin - Steve Martin</image:title>
<image:caption>Artist Steve Martin’s adventurous spirit, and zest for life comes from a vast pool of spirited ancestors, including bold and daring frontiersmen who were associated with the likes of Andrew Jackson, and Jim Bowie of Alamo fame. Also wading in the gene pool is the talented 19th century architect David Weeks, who is credited with designing a large number of the antebellum mansions along the banks of the Mississippi River and its Delta. Born in the rural Louisiana town of Tioga, where his family established the first saw mill over two hundred years ago, Martin was encouraged by his parents to develop his artistic talents. Completely self taught, Martin received formal recognition and art awards throughout his childhood and teenage years, his first at the early age of five. Despite the praise of his peers, Martin became disillusioned with the academic art world. Martin then set aside his dream to be an artist for seventeen years to pursue a career as a financial advisor. In March of 1993, a drawing of a clown by Martin’s oldest son, Christian, rekindled his own artistic flame. Steve decided to branch out beyond stocks and bonds to resurrect his artistic vision and attain his initial goal of becoming an artist. Showing regularly at respected galleries across the country, Martin’s work is now represented in over one thousand corporate, private and museum collections around the world. Through the confidence gained from his repeated sell-out shows, Steve has opened two locations of Steve Martin Studio/Gallery dedicated not only to his own works, but to the works of over fifteen internationally acclaimed artists. Martin completely abandons the straight-line theory in his artwork. Instead he uses a continuous line to explore the inexhaustible possibilities of figurative representation. These sensual exaggerations also express Martin’s feelings of what art is. “Today we are under a visual assault from all sorts of disturbing images. I feel that art should uplift the soul and elevate the spirit. This is my message and I use the human form as my messenger.” – Steve Martin</image:caption>

<image:caption>Tessa Chauvin is a studio artist living in Covington, Louisiana. Tessa was born in Texas, but spent the first few years of her life living in the Cayman Islands, where her love of nature and art began. She moved back to Texas during grade school, and was influenced by her rural surroundings and country lifestyle. Her last major move was from Texas to South Louisiana, which now plays the biggest role in her artwork. She attended college at Nicholls University, where she received a Bachelor’s of Fine Art and minored in both Art History and Business Administration. After college, Tessa moved to New Orleans and enjoyed walking into the Quarter each day while working in an upscale art gallery on Royal Street. She then got a look at the behind-the-scenes work involved in the auction business while working at a well-known auction gallery on St. Charles Ave. She has since relocated from New Orleans to the Northshore, and is currently teaching art at Brushworks Academy of Art.</image:caption>

<image:title>Rebecca Rebouché - Rebecca Rebouché</image:title>
<image:caption>I am intrigued bydualities and metaphors for human relationships. My work uses simple subject matter– to act as a metaphor for these relationships, and the essence of being human. I go about my days with a watchful eye, and when I notice something, I take a mental photograph of it. Later I explore how these objects can be metaphors for some greater human feeling of tension, harmony, loneliness, or embrace. I begin a piece by sketching the object. I make small studies on paper, usually pairing two objects together in an uncomplicated composition, using the honesty of raw pencil line, stitching, cut paper or fabric and a light color palette. I then use those small works as studies for the larger paintings. I am interested in the act of drawing. There is a fascinating renewable nature to the creation of art – making something from nothing, over and over again. I seek to communicate about tenderness and wonder, with a slant of optimism and hopefulness. When I work with my hands, I am reminded of the immediacy of a moment, and my ability to take care, mend, represent, reflect and find a willingness to be compassionate. I wonder about the stamina of human relationships. I seek to represent their range of strength and frailty, and the constant flux there-in. I know a piece is done when I am confident to stop, and can trust that it will go out into the world, and continue to tell the story from which it began, without lacking details, or saying too much. When my work is going well, I am filled with a sense of appropriateness. The act of creating good work allows me to feel at peace with the present moment. I am comfortable knowing that there is no alternate reality waiting in the wings, and no truer message is being saved for another day. When people see my work, I’d like them to be filled with a willingness to find joy and be full of wonder. I hope that my pieces whisper permission to be most splendidly alive. I aspire to see new lands, sew larger tent-tops, and swing-wide the stage curtains of life.</image:caption>

Through collaborations with historical institutions and local communities, Tanner's work reveals challenges confronting communities across America and exposes the extraordinary disparity between perceived and experienced narratives as told by those who are enduring them. Tanner has exhibited nationally and internationally, including exhibitions at the Springfield Art Museum, the Weatherspoon Art Museum, and the Susquehanna Art Museum. Her research has been supported through numerous fellowships and residencies, including A Studio in the Woods at Tulane University, the Ucross Foundation, and the Hambidge Center for the Creative Arts and Sciences. In 2023, select drawings from Tanner's ongoing project, Dish, were selected for publication in the Fifth National Climate Assessment, a two-part congressionally mandated report by the U.S. Global Change Research Program with a mission to assess the science of climate change and variability and its impacts across the United States. <image:title>Tim Hayes - Tim Hayes</image:title>
<image:caption>"How to explain and define a body of work that has evolved over 40 years is difficult, however, there is a shared trait. In one word, it is struggle. My personal experience as a design teacher, architect, and painter has laid bare this secret. Suffering is part and parcel to the design and making process. It is not the struggle to make something unique or beautiful that is the challenge, but it is the greater pursuit to make something with clarity, character and meaning. These three conceptual aspects have been slowly born and have evolved over time. They now signify the very essence of my work.
"There is a symbiotic relationship between all visual art forms, thus the connection between architecture and painting intrigues me. At their highest ideal, these two art forms speak the same language. I have found this shared language in the chaotic nature of making, the need for formal clarity, and the search for meaning.
"The scarring process of creation or building is a cherished aspect in my work. This act of making is revealed in the marks, gashes, swaths of color and discarded forms that are exposed in multiple iterative layers. The peeled away layers tell an ineffable story that is a natural part of the making process. Through indecision and dissatisfaction, the design is parsed down to the essential. Begin, stop, erase, rethink, redo, remove, question, begin again, alter, erase, remove . . . . . . . always simplifying and honing. "My hope is that the viewer is drawn to the scars left by the building and making of character and to the iterative process of seeking order found in clarity. Ultimately, my goal is that the viewer is drawn to the meaning within my art. This crowning result exposes itself through mystery and tension revealing the fragmented nature of the process. When it works, it's my definition of success." - Tim Hayes</image:caption>

<image:caption>My story begins at my childhood home in Ontario. Behind it, there was a gravel pit, and once a year it would explode into a bustling whirlwind of activity—lights, music, games, rides. It was everything a kid could love, all in her own backyard. I would sneak in when they were setting up. They let me ride for free. They told me about their adventures. And it was the first time I really felt like I fit in. I felt connected to these carnies and to this atmosphere. It became my comfort zone and my happy place. My parents allowed me to explore and discover this world. But when it came to art, they didn’t want me to turn out like them—broke! Even though they exposed me to art, the only formal training they would let me have was a sign-painting course in community college. As a result, I defiantly ran away with the proverbial circus by joining a rock band. For 20 years I got lost on the open road, and then found myself in southern Louisiana with a paintbrush in my hand. Inspired by the mystery and history of New Orleans—I sunk my brush into sign painting—pairing local folklore with the music and mystique of the Crescent City. One of the best examples of my work is for American Horror Story Season IV “Freak Show.” The original circus acts that inspired the show inspire me, and I strive to bring dignity to them as people, not just showcase them as performers. This balance of humanity and creativity is what I'm after—as I direct the “art department” of the carnival that is my life. Not to experience it myself, but to convey the sense of nostalgia, excitement and wonder that the big top brings. You could call it a desire to create ritual and suspense. My art is hearing and passing down stories. I’m a documentarian and circus banners are my canvas.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Although there are exceptions, I have never fancied myself as one who works by direct and external observation. Hence, I use the term archaeology of excavation. Long before I lost my common sense, I was an Archaeology/Geology major at Tulane. Art history documents over hundreds—if not thousands—of years the great scope of masterpieces by those whom I pursued a more direct, narrative or realist manner. The excavation painters share a very brief moment in modern time dating back to the early 20th century with the pure abstraction of Wassily Kandinsky and Arthur Dove. A brief list of some of the greats would include Miro, Gorky, Mark Tobey, Cy Twombly, and Susan Rothenberg. It has been argued (though I will spare you here) that there are more similarities than differences between these schools. Every mark and image ever laid down on canvas has a source and origin. The same can be said for memories, dreams, thoughts, and associations. From whence it came is a good question. Please note that I stipulate to oversimplification. I left my old and much loved abode of twenty three years on the Bogue Falaya river in 2012. I am now a little farther away and deeper into the woods.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Having grown up in the rural south, Chelsea uses art used to examine the connection to place. The southern landscape serves as reflection and study. Her paintings are inspired by a lifetime spent gazing at the passing skies through the pines, hiding under the heavy oaks, and observing how their weathered gestures translate into moods. Chelsea draws from an experimental background, often using unconventional methods and mediums. The artist lives in Memphis, TN with her husband, Stephen, and two rescue dogs, Charlie and Buddy.</image:caption>

<image:caption>As a young boy growing up around the swampy woods outside of New Orleans, the investigation of the natural world was occupying. The variety of forms in nature especially intrigued me, becoming a valuable resource for stimulation. I was allowed the luxury of fantasy. Approaching the design process, I like to review my work both in the formal as well as the conceptual sense. The intention is that they inform one another, with the goal being the provocation of a response from both the soul as well as the intellect. From a formal perspective, I don’t invent shapes as much as discover them. When these forms engage me enough, I appropriate them and integrate them with my choice of materials, mostly woods, combining other materials whose intrinsic value fit my purpose. Often these shapes seem primitive yet comfortable, as though they come from dreams or a prior existence. Plant forms, insect shapes, and their skeletal remains intrigue me. I believe nature to be the boldest of designers. Conceptually I am a diarist. Symbolisms and metaphors reveal my story, all of it, including the strengths and weaknesses. I respond to life’s events that are current to me, each year changing. It is perhaps just simply the ebb and flow of existence and all that it brings to me. While at times I feel the subject matter is personal, I have come to realize through response to my work, that these are really universal ideas. Executing a sculpture is both exciting and frightening. As windows of opportunity open, the view is not always under my control. During the creative process, I engage ny own personal language as well as a universal dialog that seems to guide my unconscious decisions. Integrating both form and concept, I attempt to strike a balance between there obvious and the enigmatic, as exampled in primitive tribal works. I am inspired by the craftsmanship as represented in the way a Japanese Samurai suit of armor is assembled, the expressiveness in modern dance, and the emotive possibilities in music. As an artist, my work continues to be an exploration of fantasy, inspired by the rich cultural influences of my youth, integrating the cycles life that have become me.</image:caption>

<image:caption>“I see collage as a journey for the eyes, pictures of segmented cultures from today’s fragmented society. Each collage illustrates for me a longing for escape from the current political and world climate. I prefer to be in my own worldly climate, so I create my art to take me there. By layering images over each other, sometimes taking away and layering again, I can create something beautiful and mysterious from something that may have started off mundane.” Jan prefers to be in her own world by creating her art to take her there. All of Jans work is original, never a duplication, and after completing each piece she moves on to another episode in the life of her art. By layering images over each other, sometimes taking away and layering again, she creates something beautiful and mysterious out of something that may have started off mundane. Jan loves tribal history, Native American folklore, Mexican and Pre-Colombian art and sculpture. She has also worked with many mediums including etching, lithography, ceramics, painting and sculpture. All of these mediums have inspired her current collage totems, wall sculptures and paintings. <image:caption>“I was born and raised in Michigan, USA. I studied painting and printmaking in California, and currently live and work in Oxford, UK. I am motivated by a love of the paint itself: I love the expressiveness of brushstrokes, colours, and composition; and delight in the challenge of using these elements to translate what is dynamic and compelling about my subject. I’m constantly torn between being attentive to detail and open to surprises.”</image:caption>
